90 Days: Not Same as Cash
God’s people should not let the enemy’s traps snare them into debt bondage. Too many believers suffer the plundering of their goods because they follow the foolish schemes of greed. Rather than enslave ourselves and hurt our families with lack of funds, we should save, invest, and give.
Bait for suckers: how good people get duped in a deal
Many young families feel they have to have everything mom and dad had. They forget mom and dad worked 20 years before accumulating their luxuries. Without a sense of perspective, young married couples go into debt for furniture, cars, clothes, and a home.
Greed is responsible for most debt. Jesus said our lives do not consist in the abundance of things we possess (Luke 12:15). However, many believers seem to have never read that we should be content with basic food and clothing (I Timothy 6:1-10).
Belief vs. borrowing: do we have more faith in man than God?
“I believe God will help me back this back after I make the loan.” If you really had faith, you would trust God to help you pay upfront. Taking a loan is a sign of a lack of self-control.
Good self-discipline will plan ahead and save. Impulsive self-gratification has to have it now. The same person probably also struggles with sexual sins, gluttony, or a rash temper—other sins caused by a lack of self-discipline.
Better to wait: buy-now-pay-later generates long-term shortage
“90 days” is not “the same as cash.” If paid cash for your bed, you could sleep on it without worry. If you take a deferred payment program, you could lose your job within 90 days or have some other, more-demanding expense come up. If you had paid cash, you would not lose the item.
The retailer is gambling that you will not pay them in 90 days and they will collect from you an ungodly interest rate. If you had paid cash you would not have to pay the additional interest. Why pay $2500 for a computer you could buy for at $1000 cash?
Unsecured debt is a symptom of a spiritual problem. Face your debt and conquer it. Jesus came to set us free from all bondage. Live as a child of the Kingdom, not a slave to this world.
